Symbolism

In the play there were a number of symbols that each character had. Rose Maxson was symbol of growth and love in her family. She cared for each person unconditionally, even to Raynelle her Step-Daughter. Her compassion and love was genuine to all she knew. Rose symbolizes growth in many ways throughout the play between all the characters. She grew onto Troy Maxson as time went on by expressing her love and happiness to him. She is also delicate and fragile as a rose indeed, but being she has a strong stem shows she is a strong individual.

 A Rose of My Own

A Simple Perfect Rosebud
Bathed In The Moons Eire Light
And As Night Turns Into Dawn
The Rose Slowly Opens
As If Just For Me
And As It Does
There Is No Place I Would Rather Be
And No Thing That I Could Find
That Could Compare To It's Inner Beauty
It's Sweet Scent, It's Ambience
And As Evening Comes Once More
Flame Is Reduced To Ember And I Leave
Would Every Rose Do The Same
If I Was There To See?
No, I Think Not
This Is My Rose

The fence in the play symbolizes many things as well. It shows the barrier that Troy Maxson had between each character throughout the play to keep them away from him. The fence also shows the line of demarcation that he drew between himself and his immediate family when he impregnated his mistress Alberta. Such line brought about many complications in the family which separated the family, as well as bring nothing but pain and loss of respect. Last but not least the fence also symbolizes the gate that rose had them built to protect not only herself but her family. She truly cherished her family and didn't want nothing to interfere in the home in which she was trying to build. Unfortunately every fence has a door in which people can come in and out from, so eventually the fence was rendered useless being that it couldn't keep unhappiness out of her house and family.
